This was before I discovered the new ReWire MIDI staves in NOTION 6, so it's using External MIDI to play two Reason 9 virtual instruments, while another set of VSTi virtual instruments are hosted in NOTION 6, and there are a few virtual instruments in the Digital Performer 9 project that are played by MIDI sent from NOTION 6, so NOTION 6 is playing some of the instruments it's hosting two of the instruments hosted in Reason 9 and one or two instruments hosted in Digital Performer 9, which in some respects is a bit mind-boggling. This is an example of a ReWire session where Digital Performer 9 (MOTU) is the ReWire Host Controller and both NOTION 6 and Reason 9 (Propellerhead Software) are ReWire Slaves. The disadvantage of this strategy is that there are limits to the number of VST Instruments NOTION 6 can host, and for what I call "heavy resource usage" VSTi virtual instruments, it might be as low as one, but so what, because the "one-at-a-time" VSTi virtual instruments are chromatically sampled and are super realistic, so when I need to use one, I make a separate NOTION 6 project for it and then record the generated audio in a DAW application that has the generated audio for other real and virtual instruments.

This should work in Pro Tools, but at present I don't know enough about Pro Tools to be certain. (2) Host the Kontakt 5 virtual instruments in NOTION 6 on VST Instrument staves and then send the generated audio to Pro Tools via ReWire audio channels. This strategy has the advantage of keeping the NOTION 6 project lean with respect to its use of system resources. (1) Host the Kontakt 5 virtual instruments in Pro Tools and use ReWire MIDI staves in NOTION 6 to provide music notation that at play time will send MIDI to Pro Tools to play the Kontakt 5 virtual instruments. There are at least two ways you can do what you want to do: Saving your work frequently always is a smart strategy, of course. There's a learning curve for ReWire, but once you get it working and do a few songs with it, then it becomes second nature. ReWire MIDI is newer, and it's easier to use when the applications support it, which Pro Tools and NOTION 6 do.

Without ReWire MIDI, you can use NOTION 6 External MIDI staves and a "virtual MIDI cable", which on the Mac is provided via Audio MIDI Setup and the Mac OS X infrastructure. The advantage of ReWire MIDI is that the ReWire infrastructure provides the MIDI pipes that interconnect and synchronize Pro Tools and NOTION 6 with respect to MIDI notes and commands, as well probably as audio streams. I was able to find the "Pro Tools 12.6 Reference Guide" and the "Pro Tools 11 Audio Plug-Ins Guide", and it's likely that there are not so many differences in Pro Tools 11 and Pro Tools 12, 6 with respect to ReWire MIDI, but this is just a guess.

You will need to study the "Pro Tools Reference Guide" and the "Audio Plug-Ins Guide", especially the latter, since it's where the detailed information about the ReWire Plug-in is found, including how to use it. In theory, you can have 16 ReWire MIDI buses in NOTION 6, each of which can have as many as 16 channels, which maps to a total of 256 stereo channels that you can use to play virtual instruments hosted in Pro Tools. You will be able to do more work in terms of system resources and processing when you host the virtual instruments in Pro Tools but play them via music notation on ReWire MIDI staves in NOTION 6.

You also can host instruments in NOTION 6 and it's possible that NOTION 6 will be able to send the generated audio to Pro Tools, although at present I am not certain about NOTION 6 sending its generated audio to Pro Tools. The high-level perspective is that you provide music notation in NOTION 6 for ReWire MIDI staves and this music notation is used in Pro Tools to play various instruments hosted in Pro Tools. NOTION 6 supports ReWire MIDI, so the way it will work is that you will start Pro Tools first, which makes it the ReWire Host Controller, and then you will start NOTION 6 which makes it a ReWire Slave. I do not have Pro Tools, so there is not a lot I can do regarding specifics, but you are doing digital music production on the Mac, and this is the platform I use, so I can provide some help. As best as I can determine by reading some of the Pro Tools user guides, Pro Tools 12 supports ReWire MIDI via a Pro Tools plug-in that is included with Pro Tools.
